I’m a gambler, not a casino gambler, I gamble on domain names, in the early days I was pretty sure of my investments, getting generic .com domains like SwampCoolers.com, Purrs.com, and StringBikinis.com for a reg fee was a pretty sure bet, at that point it was becoming a no brainer, all you had to do was listen to Rick Schwartz for 5 minutes, any 5 minutes, his message has always been the same, get generic recognizable .com’s.
When it really becomes a gamble for me is when I am betting on non .com’s, I realize many domain investors get .com’s that can be worthless too, so they can be a gamble also, but at this point I can usually spot a decent .com, something I can sell for a profit, but it is not so easy with other extensions. So why do it? Because like I said I gamble on domains, I’m a player, lol.
Betting on non .com’s has taught me alot about words and terms and phrases and relevance and making mistakes and having to really think, research, and plan out what I am doing. With .com it’s pretty easy, DiscountAirfares.com is a no brainer, but I can’t give Airfares.tv away, even with just the one word it’s basically irrelevant in the .tv extension, who thinks of watching airfares? So everything outside of .com is very term.extension dependent imo, you can’t just take any popular word or common phrase and register it in .anything and assume it will have value, even Rick has experienced this with .mobi, like I said non .com is a gamble, even for the best gamblers.
So all this brings me to what I’m thinking about, new gTLD’s, I would probably spend some capital betting on new gTLD’s if I thought I could get any domain I wanted, if I could have the pick of the litter, I would take a chance, there will be some big sales I’m sure, just like Meet.me sold for $450k, because together it says something, I don’t see Meet.info or Meet.tv selling for anywhere close to that. I would have grabbed some .xxx if I could have got the ones I wanted, Gay.xxx, Toys.xxx, Movies.xxx, etc, obvious stuff that says something, but I couldn’t so I didn’t get any, and I am pretty sure the domains I would want in the new gTLD’s will be just as out of my reach so I probably won’t get any right now.
If I could get anything I wanted, domains like these might be some on my list, and even then I would feel like a gambler: Mobile.App, Pet.Shop, Ad.Agency, Classified.Ads, Tax.Attorney, Car.Auction, Venture.Capital, Stock.Broker, Caribbean.Cruise, Alternative.Energy, HongKong.Hotels, Healthy.Food, Art.Gallery, Digital.Art, Birthday.Gifts, Tour.Guide, Mobile.Homes, Diamond.Jewelry, etc. It’s all making my head spin, OK maybe that’s the beer lol, but it is alot to take in, anyway if I invested at all I would be very picky about my word combinations and only spend what I could afford to lose or invest for the long term, even more picky than I have been with my other non .com investment experiments, this includes .net and .org.
I bring this all up because I know many of you will be investing in these, and like Frank Schilling said, maybe “This is 1998 all over again” – I have no idea, it doesn’t seem as no brainer as 1998 to me, I am sure there will be lots of successes, but alot more chances for failure also, in 1998 if you just took Rick’s advice it was pretty simple, get generic .com’s, now it’s a bit more complicated imo, so be careful and be smart, remember it’s still a gamble, even 1998 was a gamble, some were saying this internet thing was just a fad…

Lengthy post but your points are valuable. Really with so many extensions – it’s important that your domain should make sense like the example of domain name ‘meet.me’
But, this way there will be limitation to number of domains each extension may carry and as a result .com, .net or .org will continue to be the chief choices.
