When I read Rick’s posts about people selling domains too cheap I felt guilty, like he is talking about me. Why do I feel this way? Because he is talking about me, maybe not just me, I did not sell Beep.me, the domain he was using as an example, but I am guilty of selling some domains for too cheap.
In the last few years I have definitely undersold domains due to the uncomfortable situation I found myself in. I pretty much always agree with Rick, definitely on this subject, but I thought I would also post a story of how extenuating circumstances can play a role in domain sales decisions, it’s my story.
Five years ago I was rolling, parking income was much more than renewals, my adult domains and sites were making mad money, I was doing great buying and selling rock posters, music memorabilia, and art on Ebay, I had an herbal manufacturing business that was doing great, and I was making money and having a great time writing, recording, and performing music.
Then in 2009 I got in a car accident, broke my neck, and was paralyzed from the neck down for a while, I couldn’t move a finger or toe. This sucked obviously but at the same time, like the perfect storm, parking died, adult income died, posters and memorabilia sales died, I couldn’t physically run my herb business like I did before so it went downhill fast, and I couldn’t do any music stuff because of my physical condition.
Also like an American Idiot, I had no health insurance, but I always pay my bills so I paid all the medical bills out of pocket, I’m talking some big bucks here, I had to get part of my vertebrae replaced, a bunch of therapy, a nice long stay in a Santa Fe hospital, and a $20k helicopter ride to that hospital.
So I decided to sell some domains, but the difference was before this I basically ignored offers until buyers were begging for the domain, which meant most sales were end user sales, now I was accepting offers that I would not have accepted before, I was in survival mode.
I am not 100% yet but I can walk, wipe, type, and 😉 again so it’s all good, it’s all great actually, I am happy I had domains to undersell lol, but now I see a light at the end of the tunnel so I don’t feel as desperate and vulnerable as I did for a while. I feel lucky, and Rick has six of my domains under contract at JV so I have high hopes for the future…
Here are the domain picks dropping on May 19th 2013:

BayBay.com – It’s a city in the Philippines, it has a $38k estibot value if that means anything

HikeAndClimb.com – I would use this name if I had a hiking/climbing related site
iAmResponsible.com – Obviously I am probably not worthy of this domain lol
JKOE.com – JanofskyKaczorowskiObremskiAndEliszewski.com or JKOE.com, you decide
LakesAndPonds.com – I like lakes and ponds, I think I like this domain
SecurityGuru.com – No type-in’s I am sure but a decent name for a security site
TNDK.com – Donna Karan in Tennessee lol

Hey easy come easy go.
You don’t have to apologize, it is your domains and you do as you please.
By the way, my weekend musings is sleep, eat, and counting my blessing on winning the power ball.
Hey Mark,
I really enjoy your posts. I like how you casually drop nuggets of your humanity and your honesty in the short everyday stories, you tell. I read your blog, not for the names but for the anecdotes. You should write more, you have a way of looking at things that is priceless.
I’m glad you made it out with a clear mind. Forward.
Nicest comment I’ve ever had eh, thanks for that…
