I get asked why I list .me and .tv and not other extension like .co, .info, .biz, .us, .cc, etc. It’s because I am looking through and listing the extensions I’m investing in. I’ve experimented a bit with all these other extensions but they did not work out as well for me as .me and .tv, I started making money immediately with them so I just followed the money, I posted earlier today about my .me experience, .tv has not been as busy but I do sell them and good ones can bring decent money, and I also like the .me and .tv extensions, that is important when you are selling something.
I have nothing against these other extensions and I know people make money on them, I have just focused on what has provided me the best return, and the type of domains that get me the most inquiries, what works best for the type of domains that I get, we don’t all get the same type of domains, there are many niches. I have a friend that does pretty good with .cc domains, he is multilingual and more worldly than I am, and he better understands Chinese culture than I do, so he is able to pick out .cc domains that I wouldn’t get and sell them in the Chinese market, I would go broke doing this. I know another domain investor that has done well with IDN’s, I have never even considered registering one, I am not that worldly.
I take chances sometimes but I still think the safest bet is .com, not just any .com but recognizable, searched, things and products and terms and words and phrases, and pronounceable short could be words, and decent LLLL’s and NNNN’s, and even better LLL’s and NNN’s if you can afford them, imo they will just continue to increase in value. My two cents is unless you are sure you have some niche figured out, save up a little, hold out on the 100 questionable .me or .info or .com reg’s and spend that on a decent expiring .com or two at NameJet or SnapNames, or do some mining on the aftermarkets, maybe pick a genre you know.
Offer and bid on the best domains you think you might have a chance of getting if you were to get a great deal, names you know are worth more than you have to spend, maybe you will get one of mine when I am desperate lol, it happens, if you don’t get that domain find the next that fits the criteria, eventually you will get a good domain for a good deal, then save up and do it again, and when you sell one for a profit, reinvest. I understand when you start off like this you will feel like you have all your eggs (or all your egg lol) in one basket, but with domains, quality is a much better bet than quantity imo.
After the initial investment a .com will cost you $10 a year, a decent .com will probably make enough in parking to pay for itself also, maybe even generate some extra income, nothing better than a domain that pays for itself until it sells. 100 made up questionable domains will cost maybe $1k per year in renewals, maybe more, and they probably won’t pay for themselves with parking income. If they are not getting traffic or inquiries or selling then maybe it is better to have one or two golden eggs in one basket than to carry around multiple baskets full of heavy, perhaps rotten eggs.
I keep stressing this point because I keep getting the same type domain lists from different people, some have 100 or more names and none look to me like they have much if any value, and none ever receive inquiries or sell, if they did I suppose they wouldn’t be asking me for advice on how to sell them. OK enough subliminal messaging…

Domain of the day: StraightJacket.com – Make me an Offer I can’t refuse!
Thanks for reading my blog…
Let me tell you this- no other bloggers (you know who they are by telling their paid sponsors on their blog) will never dare tell you that the dot whatever is not a good investment because they dare not speak “bad” about their sponsors.
Basically they are paid not to express their opinions -too afraid to lose their sponsorships.
As you said, why buy the dot whatever when you can save up your money and buy a good .com.
I see some good potentials on some new Gtlds, I won’t say what they are because of BullS’s domain strategies.
I have had a few inquiries but haven’t taken any sponsors yet so I can still tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, but the bigger issue is some just “can’t handle the truth” lol…
But when you start telling the truth, then the sponsors will shun you.
They are the ones that cannot handle the truth!! so are the bloggers that are paid by the sponsors.
I call them accepting dirty money!!
That why I whole heartily respect Eric’s Impulse Communications blog.
He tells the way he sees it!!
I make money on domains, I don’t blog for money, I blog because I am an ego maniac lol…
you make money from your good looks!!
If that is true Shane should be a billionaire, we can all see how handsome he is from his pic but apparently, as the well respected Dr. Chris Hartnett told him “you’re much better looking in person” lol…
Nice blog Mark! Just found it by surfing around. Very insightful write-up! I stick with the .com’s only.
Does anyone actually spell it straightjacket and not straitjacket?
This is one of those see in an auction and overbid before you realize it type names.
It’s spelled both ways. It looks like straight jacket gets more searches than strait jacket at google. Also surprising to me is estibot.com values StraightJacket.com at $99k and StraitJacket.com at $1.5k, for whatever that is worth…
Can never account for internet users ability to spell anything correctly when not given choices let alone when there are two correct answers!
I suppose the modern way is the phonetic way and familiar way.
The best would be if I had both no doubt.
I do like your blog though… it’s the most cut through the nonsense, no bullshit (except the commenter) sites on domains that exists. Straight down the line, no crap, it is what it is. I wish there were more of you and less of the mundane.
You need to be more picky with your blog friends, my friend.
I don’t pick and choose comments, if it is not spam it gets posted…
I meant mr bullshitwebsites otherwise I may have to include myself.
You talking about me….
I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed but I am pretty sure he was talking about you, lol…
Yeah and I meant it literal as in “Bulls” is the bullshit in the comments.
Not a comment on your actual contribution just strictly based on name so don’t be offended.
Mark, Thanks for writing in such details. I read it all and definitely your advise deserve action.
