Here is a crazy domain sales story. In april I sold a domain at GoDaddy. In early may the funds cleared and I sent the buyer an email:
The domain is at DomainMonster.com, you can either open an account there and I will push it into your account or you can initiate a transfer at another registrar like GoDaddy.com and I will get you the necessary transfer codes.
A week later I get this email from the buyer:
So, I already payed for the domain. What’s next? How can I use it?
I re-sent the first message with the DomainMonster.com/transfer info. Then a week later I get this email from the buyer:
I won the auction of your domain [deleted]. Please do the transfer to my account cause I already did the payment time ago and I don’t know why it should take so long to have my domain. If you need any information of my account to do the transfer feel free to ask.
In between these emails I was getting GoDaddy transfer codes every day and forwarding them to the buyer, I must have got a dozen GoDaddy transfer code emails. So I sent the buyer this email:
Here are the codes you need. You have to log into your GoDaddy account and click on pending transfers and input these codes. You have to do this as I cannot log into your GoDaddy account. If you need assistance the tech support people at GoDaddy are very helpful.
Still I just kept getting GoDaddy transfer codes emails, so I contacted GoDaddy support with this message:
I sold the domain [deleted] through the GoDaddy auctions and I have been paid but the domain has not been transferred yet. I keep getting emails with the transfer codes and try and explain to the buyer that she needs to go to her GoDaddy account and input these codes. But then she keeps emailing me to please transfer the domain? I think she is confused.
Can you help her get the domain transferred to GoDaddy? Here is all the info:
I then get this email from the buyer:
I’ve been receiving e-mails from godaddy.com That you need to transfer the domain I bought from you. Please do so or I will need to ask my money back
I had actually sent GoDaddy support a few emails regarding this and I kept getting the same response which was just instructions on how to transfer a domain to them? So I forwarded their email to the buyer. I then get this email from GoDaddy 2 days ago:
The buyer has notified us the the domain name [deleted] was never transferred to them. Upon researching the domain name, it appears that the domain is no longer in your control.
As stated in the Go Daddy Auctions Membership Agreement you accepted at the time you purchased your membership, you are responsible for providing the domain name once you are notified that the funds have been paid by the buyer.
Your auction account has been locked for selling a domain you couldn’t move to the buyer. I am writing to you today because the buyer contacted us after the funds had already been released to your PayPal account, requesting a refund, since the domain is not available. Go Daddy Auctions would really appreciate your cooperation in returning the funds to PayPal so that we may refund the buyer.
WTF and LOL? “The domain is no longer in your control” – yes it is, it still is today, nothing changed on this domain from when I sold it. So I responded to GoDaddy:
Maybe you can check things better. I have been emailing the customer and tech support for the past 2 months trying to get somebody at GoDaddy to help this poor gal transfer the domain over. Maybe better tech support communication on your part would be a good idea? I can show you 12 emails that I have emailed the buyer with all the codes she needs for transfer. She is confused so I have been trying to explain it to her. I can also show you numerous GoDaddy tech support emails I have sent regarding this. Now you say I am not keeping up my end of the bargain?
Here is everything she needs to get the transfer going, why don’t you help her before you freeze my good standing account?
Before I made it to PayPal to refund the money I get this message from the buyer:
Thank you very much. Your previous mails went to my Spam Folder. I’m sorry if I send you to many notices. I’ll contact the support team of godaddy. Thanks
Then today I get this email from GoDaddy:
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Unfortunately we can only see the domain has not moved to the buyer and they are emailing wanting a refund. Clearly as you stated there is a disconnect. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.
We have forwarded the transfer codes along with transfer instructions to the buyer. Again we thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. If you have further questions or concerns please contact us.

That’s quite frustrating and funny story. Took too long to solve the mystery 😀
Yea I agree, if it didn’t I probably wouldn’t have posted about it…
I thought people called you the Steven Tyler of domaining? You look more like Richie Sambora to me but what do I know.
Australia is expensive. Better get some sales in if you want to explore the urban down under.
Mark,
Really a thrilling episode you had. We can’t control spam technology and it’s also one reason why most of the end user emails which domainers sent not gets any response.
